Formerly trained as a sculptor, and having made a full time living as a successful fine art painter, you’d never guess that the next field of endeavour would be food art. But that’s where you’d be wrong. Annabel de Vetten has taken the cake world by storm by presenting cake and other food art that’s well outside the fare you’d find by strolling down to your local bakery.
“The years I spent painting and sculpting were helping me build the foundation I needed for the work I’m now doing. I just didn’t realize it at the time,”
Annabel’s foyer into food art started by her making her own wedding cake. Before she knew it the orders started pouring in. It wasn’t long after that she quickly decided that “the ordinary” just wasn’t for her.
Drawing inspiration from the things she loves – horror movies, alternative art, animals, and whatever strikes her fancy at the moment, Annabel’s creations have quickly gained popularity with people both in and out of the cake world.
“It’s great! One day I’ll be working on a full-sized replica of the actor from the TV show Dexter for FOX, then I’ll be doing a wedding cake for a couple who runs an S&M business, and the next I’ll be doing a dragon for a wedding at Warwick Castle.”
When around one of Annabel’s creations it’s common to hear, “That’s EDIBLE?!” And you hear it a lot. But eat it they do – to the last bite.
